Its only 2.15 hours flight from Newark but the air fare is usually very expensive. I was lucky to get a last minute continental airline deal. It costs only $160 to Savannah; round trip. The first day when I arrived, the weather was hot and humid. It was gross. It reminds me of the weather in Malaysia. Because it was so hot, I really didn’t have any mood to do anything. We just drove around the town (its pretty small) and took some pics. Though I was excited to be able to see the Forsyth Park Fountain, Chippewa Square (the square where Forrest Gump was sitting on the bench waiting for the bus to see Jenny), and the Spanish moss draped oak trees. Savannah is a lovely little southern town. People are nice and welcoming. To our surprise, there is Marc Jacobs store similar to the one at P-Town. At night time, we joined the Ghost Walking Tour. I thought I saw a black shadow when the tour guide told us that that Bed and Breakfast is haunted. It wasn’t scary at all. In fact, the body odor from the tour guide was scarier.
The next day, the weather was all cool and nice. What a difference a day makes. In the morning, we drove to a nearby church, recommended by my guide book to have southern fried chicken. The wait was long because they were short of staffs. The food was ok but different. I had fried chicken and collard greens. I must say the fried chicken from the house of prayer in DC is much better. After that, we headed to Tybee Island. Tybee is only 20 min away from Savannah. We saw the Tybee lighthouse (the oldest in Georgia). On the way back, we stopped by Fort Pulaski National Monument. Of course I was excited to get a stamp for my NPS Passport. Since we didn’t get to see Savannah yesterday because it was really hot, we spent the rest of the afternoon strolling around the charming town of Savannah. At 6, we had a reservation for tor the infamous Lady and Sons restaurant (owned by celebrity chef Paula Deen). The place was packed. Food was good but I wish they had more variety. After dinner we went back to the hotel left the next morning. I am glad I went to Savannah. Finally I have seen the charm side of the South.
